Woodland & Forestry
The estate includes 2000 acres of woodland. From which 100 tonnes of quality firewood is produced and sold each year, 400 tonnes of woodchip is produced each year for the biomass burner that is about to be installed in the Castle to decrease the Castles carbon footprint and at the same time saving £70,000 a year on fuel, again with an emphasis on the castle becoming self-sufficient, making use of the natural resources on the estate.
Quality oak, cherry, ash, sycamore, and yew are sold for commercial use, with a full replanting and management programme in place to look to the future for all of the woodland and parkland at Belvoir.
60 cubic metres of ash trees are grown commercially for the production of Hurling sticks and Cricket bat willow is grown for cricket bat production. Timber is sold for fencing.
Three miles of shelter belts of mixed woodland have also been planted to break up open ground.
