AFTERNOON TEA AT BELVOIR CASTLE

Belvoir Castle is said to be the official home of Afternoon Tea, so what better place to enjoy a scone or two!

Open 11am – 5pm

Afternoon Tea has long been regarded as one of Britain’s finest traditions. A tradition that started right here at Belvoir Castle.

It is believed that it was conceived in the 1840s by the 7th Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Stanhope whilst visiting the Duke and Duchess of Rutland. At this time meals were traditionally only taken twice a day, once in the morning and the second mid evening. Whilst being entertained by her hosts The Duchess of Bedford would call for a pot of tea accompanied with both savory and sweet delicate refreshments around midafternoon to stave off the hunger before the evening meal. It was during her stay at Belvoir Castle that the British Afternoon Tea was born.

The Duchess of Bedford continued to invite friends to join her for Afternoon Tea and it didn’t take long for other socialites to follow suit. It was soon to become, as it remains today a popular tradition and served in the finest establishment around the world.

Our Afternoon Tea tickets include a ticket to see the beautiful gardens at Belvoir and a delicious afternoon tea for two in the Castle Tea room. If you’d like to see the State rooms in the Castle, either on a Guided Tour (£8 extra) or free flow admission (£6 extra), you can upgrade your ticket on the day at the Ticket Office.

We serve a selection of made-to-order sandwiches, homemade fruit cake or Victoria sponge, scones with jam and cream as well as hot and cold drinks.

Our Afternoon Tea is available when the Castle is open, so please check this calendar to see our Opening Times. Afternoon Tea can also be booked in our Fuel Tank Restaurant, located at the foot of the castle at The Engine Yard.
